11·9 months agoSame. Pretty decent resume as software engineer, 100s of applications, and like 3 interviews total, none of which hired me.
PyCharm is a solid choice. It just works. But if you’re open to another editor, take a look at Zed. It has python support too. It’s super snappy and way less bloated than the others.

8·1 year agoThanks for this!! I became spoiled with Arc’s UI, but it’s a Chrome based browser. This looks like it’s the same experience without the bs.
Donations do not obligate anyone to do anything. It’s a donation, not pay. They should be done out of appreciation for someone’s time and effort, or to help support any potential work the project decides to do. But never with the expectation that you’re owed something back for donating.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What public resources do you feel are overlooked/underrated?
5·1 year agoMost counties offer this. It’s a truly unknown and underused service. Even if you don’t have a truck, you can rent a U-Haul truck and it would still be way cheaper than bags of compost/soil.
I found out about it when studying for the Master Gardner program. For anyone interested in the US, call your local Extensions office and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you have any tips or tricks to fall asleep?
3·1 year agoThis is similar to the meditation technique of anapanasati (mindfulness of the breath). I couple that with repeating in my head “rising” on inhale, “falling” on exhale and focusing on the tickling sensation on the tip of your nose with each breath. Next thing I know I’m waking up in the morning.
This is a big one. One of my friends would constantly berate himself like “I’m such an idiot”, “I’m a dumb old dinosaur” anytime he couldn’t fully grasp a new concept. Over time I could tell that it was actually making him less likely to give himself a chance at understanding. And he truly is a smart dude. One day I called him out on it and he just stayed quiet, took a deep breath and said “you’re right. I’m not an idiot, just need time to understand”. He no longer says it and now embraces a mental challenge.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you need to get off your chest before the New Year?
2·1 year agoYeah I don’t expect any of those sacks of meat and bones to wanna help working people. But it’s crazy the amount of business owners that wanted to wait till the election to hire again. Well, now they better put their money where their mouth is.
As for H1B, we had the same thing happen with virtual assistants. That trend seemed to die off pretty quick. Hoping the current trends change a bit in our favor.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you need to get off your chest before the New Year?
3·1 year agoThank you. Yes, I’m a software engineer by trade in the US and really hope this new year and the new administration (not saying I agree with it) encourages businesses to hire again. Been applying and interviewing since July with no success. Many other devs I talk to that left/loss their jobs last year have shared the same experience.
Once I get that sorted out, I should be able to get insurance again. It’s just crazy that you need to be working to even attempt to be healthy and get the care needed.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you need to get off your chest before the New Year?
17·1 year agoIf I don’t get my health in order, build better habits, and find a decent job this year, I’ll probably end up dead before 2025 ends. Somethings not right with my body but without insurance or an income to get a plan from the marketplace, either my heart, lungs, or Crohns will take me out.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Did someone actually quit smoking after using a vape?
5·1 year agoI wish I could vape. This is gonna sound stupid, bc it is, but I’m a chronic asthmatic who has smoked for about 20 years now. Been intubated twice for asthma. And yet I still can’t put the damn cigarettes down. I’ve tried patches, gum, hypnotism, medication, you name it.
Vaping was the only thing that was helping when I switched but believe it or not, it was bothering me way more than a cigarette. Immediate throat scratchiness and shortness of breath. That doesn’t happen with smokes though. I’ve tried all sorts of vapes too. All with the same result.
Smoking is probably gonna be what takes me out and it sucks that I feel totally powerless. I will say though, that the book “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr got me off cigs for about 3 months. Then my grandpa died and it all spiraled back from there.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What opinions about the tech industry do you feel comfortable expressing here, but not in public/at work?
141·1 year agoSoftware dev tools and process are so convoluted and unnecessary. We need to find a happy medium between sites being published via FTP uploads like before and the CI/CD madness of today. And there’s too many tooling options available. It’s caused a huge amount of disparity between options. Look at the JavaScript ecosystem for example.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a website you've heard of (besides Lemmy) that you're sure nobody else here has?
8·1 year agoI use his site all the time! Took a while to get the hang of where to find stuff but most important links and data is all there.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a website you've heard of (besides Lemmy) that you're sure nobody else here has?
111·1 year agoThe amount of insane content on that site is astounding. It was kinda nice how fast the plain HTML pages loaded though.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever been experienced a natural disaster? If so, which one?
9·1 year agoTo me at least, it feels like the air got heavier (even though it’s really getting lighter). That could be followed by your ears popping. Some people like me get joint pain. My wife gets migraines right away with big pressure drops. Atmospheric pressure is a weird thing.
Rockstor here. Which is interesting bc I’ve been thinking about setting up another NAS.

It’s bc of shit like this…
